20/ Lower House Speaker Discusses Industrial Sector Growth, Economic Modernization
Amman, January 19 (Petra) – Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Ahmad Safadi underscored the significance of Jordan’s industrial sector as a cornerstone of the national economy and emphasized the need to address challenges hindering its performance to ensure sustained growth. Speaking during a meeting on Sunday with the Chairman and members of the Jordan Chamber of Industry, Safadi highlighted the chamber’s vital role in driving economic modernization, aligning with directives from His Majesty King Abdullah II. The meeting, coordinated with the parliamentary Energy and Mineral Resources and Economy and Investment Committees, was attended by key parliamentary leaders and representatives from various industrial chambers across Jordan. Safadi reaffirmed the Lower House of Parliament’s commitment to supporting the industrial and commercial sectors, stressing their potential in regional reconstruction efforts, particularly in Gaza and Syria. He called for enhanced cooperation between lawmakers and the industrial community to eliminate barriers and foster continued success. Chairman of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry, Fathi Jaghbir, praised the partnership between the legislative body and the industrial sector, describing the industrial sector as a key engine of Jordan’s comprehensive economic growth. Jaghbir noted that the sector accounts for 40% of the country’s economic growth, employs 21% of the workforce, and supports over one million Jordanians, making it a significant contributor to job creation and development. Jaghbir proposed the establishment of a joint committee comprising representatives from relevant parliamentary committees and the Jordan Chamber of Industry to regularly address legislative and operational challenges confronting the sector. Chairman of the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee MP Khaled Abu Hassan echoed the need for deeper collaboration, emphasizing the sector’s capacity to seize emerging regional opportunities to increase production and generate employment. Meanwhile, MP Haitham Ziyadin, Chair of the Parliamentary Energy Committee, underscored the committee’s commitment to engaging with industrial stakeholders and advocating for their demands to enhance the sector’s resilience and output.
