Amman, Feb. 23 (Petra) -- The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Al-Maghtas) has been named the Best UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 2025 GIST Acta Awards for Archaeological and Cultural Tourism, according to the Jordan Tourism Board. The award recognizes outstanding cultural heritage sites that excel in heritage preservation, enhance visitor accessibility, and promote sustainable tourism practices, the board said in a statement on Sunday. The award was presented during a ceremony on Feb. 21 in Florence, Italy, at Sala Verde, Villa Vittoria Piazza, as part of the global TourismA exhibition for archaeological and cultural tourism. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab said the recognition underscores Jordan’s position as a major destination for religious tourism, highlighting the country’s role in fostering peace, coexistence, and cultural diversity. She emphasized the historical and religious significance of Al-Maghtas, describing it as a site of global importance. "The award strengthens Jordan’s efforts to preserve and promote its religious and cultural heritage. This achievement serves as an invitation for pilgrims and cultural travelers to visit the Kingdom and explore this vital part of the Holy Land," she said. Jordan Tourism Board Director General, Abdulrazzaq Arabiyat, said the recognition highlights Jordan’s continued commitment to religious tourism. He noted that Al-Maghtas remains a key pilgrimage site for Christian visitors and an important attraction for global tourism. He added that the board remains dedicated to preserving and promoting the site to ensure its historical and spiritual legacy is maintained for future generations. Located on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, Al-Maghtas is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Its growing significance further reinforces Jordan’s status as a leading destination for religious and cultural tourism.
