6/ JEF, British envoy explore prospects for economic cooperation
Amman, Feb. 22 (Petra) - Jordan Economic Forum (JEF) hosted the British Ambassador to Jordan, Philip Ridley Hall, for its discussion session held recently on Jordanian-British relations. The forum's chairman, Mazen Hmoud, said Jordan-UK relations extend back decades, and are distinguished by their "historic, dee-rooted and close" cooperation in various fields. According to a JEF statement Saturday, Hmoud indicated that this "strong" connection includes relations between the two Royal families, especially between His Majesty King Abdullah II and King Charles III, who met twice in recent months. Hmoud referred to the ongoing inter-governmental coordination in political, economic and security issues. Additionally, he noted the untapped opportunities to further increase volume of trade exchange, in light of Jordan's "promising" potentials. Meanwhile, the envoy said "intensive" efforts are being made to establish a Jordanian-British Business Council, expressing aspiration to officially announce its launch in the coming few months. With regard to services, the diplomat noted Britain accounts for approximately 10% of Jordan's imports in this sector, while goods constitute a "smaller" percentage ranging between 2-3% of total imports. Hall added that the services sector is the "highest growing" business, noting that Jordan has "remarkable" potential in this sector, especially in the field of information technology and financial services. Jordan has "great" opportunities in the information technology sector, as it offers a "strong" market that relies on "qualified" workers who speak Arabic fluently, which gives it a "competitive" advantage in providing services to regional Arabic-speaking markets, the ambassador pointed out. //Petra// AG More...
