11/ Parliament Speaker: King did not compromise on national interest, Arab issues

Amman, Feb 22 (Petra) -- Lower House Speaker Ahmad Safadi said Tuesday that all Jordanians are united behind His Majesty King Abdullah II, who did not compromise on the national interest and resolutely said "no" to resettlement displacement or alternative homeland of the Palestinians.

Addressing a conference of the Arab Parliament in Cairo, titled:"The Arab Document to Support the Steadfastness of the Palestinian People on its Land," he pledged that Jordan will remain true to its Arab nation and stand by Palestine "in all circumstances."

He referred to Egypt's stand in support of Jordan's position after His Majesty's meeting with US President Donald Trump, which, he said, demonstrated Arab accord, and also cited a coordination meeting by Arab leaders in Saudi Arabia yesterday to unite Arab ranks and efforts.

The King's speech, he said, was an unequivocal message that Jordan is against the displacement of Palestinians, armed with popular support and backed by Arab leaders, adding that representatives of the people stand behind the leaders at their upcoming summit in Cairo, to say with one voice: "Gaza is for its people and there will be no displacement of its population."

"We are before the most difficult turning point in the history of the Palestinian issue, with reverberations across the entire region. Therefore, there's no security or stability without a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state," Safadi told the conference.

The Jordanian delegation took part in a preparatory meeting of the Arab Parliament to draft a 17-article charter rejecting the displacement of Palestinians, underscoring the Palestinian's right to set up an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and including action with international parliaments in support of the Palestinian cause.
