35/ Tourism minister, UNESCO representative discuss safeguarding global heritage sites

Amman, Feb. 20 (Petra)-- Lina Ennab, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, met with Noha Bawazir, the UNESCO Representative in Jordan, to go over the most recent advancements in the collaboration files between the two organizations.

In addition to taking advantage of UNESCO's proficiency in all technical tasks and the ministry's follow-up mechanism, the meeting saw the discussion of collaborative projects and ongoing files, with an emphasis on the status of Jordanian sites placed on the World Heritage List.

Building bridges of cooperation and creating collaborative work procedures in all technical and scientific topics for archaeological and heritage sites are important aspects of the meeting, according to Ennab, who emphasized the significance of coordination with UNESCO in all files pertaining to World Heritage sites.

In collaboration with the appropriate authorities, including the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Department of Antiquities, the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, the Baptism Site Commission, and the Ministry of Culture, Bawazir stated their plan to host a workshop in early March 2025. With the assistance of specialists in nomination procedures, the workshop seeks to create frameworks for assessing and conserving sites on the World Heritage List as well as those on the tentative list.

The Petra and Wadi Rum project was discussed at the end of the meeting, and a consensus was reached on coordination and cooperation in this significant project that aims to preserve these two sites on the World Heritage List. The local community will also be involved in these efforts and support them by developing unique tourism activities.
