34/ Jordan Leads Arab States in Global Inequality Reduction Index

Amman, Feb. 20 (Petra) -- The Jordan Strategy Forum has released a policy paper titled "Jordan's Commitment to Reducing Inequality: Positive Indicators for 2024," analyzing Jordan's performance in Oxfam's latest Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index.

Jordan advanced to 43rd place globally in the 2024 report, up from 54th in 2022, among 164 participating countries. This progress positioned Jordan at the top of Arab states and second among the 50 participating middle-income countries.

The significant improvement was primarily driven by Jordan's progress in tax progressivity, where it jumped from 65th place in 2022 to 14th in 2024. Jordan ranked 44th in labor rights and wages, and 100th in public services spending.

In the tax structure subcategory, Jordan ranked 16th globally, while placing 42nd in tax impact on inequality reduction. However, the country showed modest performance in tax collection efficiency, ranking 73rd.

The Forum highlighted that Jordan achieved second place globally in the labor income's impact on reducing inequality (Gini coefficient).

The Forum's analysis showed Jordan's Gini coefficient at 0.34, indicating relatively fair wage distribution, with 80% of social security subscribers receiving 56% of total wages in 2023.

By comparison, the report showed about 70% of participating countries had Gini coefficients of 0.4 or higher, with wage inequality worsening in more than half of the countries since the 2022 report.

The policy paper emphasized that reducing inequality enhances workforce potential, increases overall productivity, and strengthens social cohesion and institutional trust.
