3/ GFJTU Engages in High-Level World Bank Discussions
Amman, Feb. 20 (Petra) – The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) took part in the 2025 High-Level Meetings of International Financial Institutions and the Global Labor Movement organized by the World Bank in Washington, D.C. The meetings, which concluded today, saw the participation of trade union federations from various countries, all members of the International Trade Union Confederation Representing the GFJTU at the event were Vice President Khaled Abu Marjoub, and Federation Advisor Nizam Qahoush. The primary focus of the discussions was to enhance the understanding between labor unions, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on issues of shared concern. The sessions addressed critical economic challenges, particularly the impact of the global debt crisis on developing countries, and explored strategies for alleviating its effects. On the sidelines of the event, Abu Marjoub met with Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, who commended the recent meeting held with His Majesty King Abdullah II. The discussion emphasized reinforcing economic collaboration between Jordan and the World Bank in various sectors. The meetings included several sessions dedicated to the role of labor unions in holding international financial institutions accountable for ensuring workers’ rights in World Bank-funded projects. Additionally, topics such as economic transformation, the creation of decent jobs within care economies, and the promotion of sound labor policies were discussed.
