13/ Meteorology Department Warns of Harsh Weather as Polar Wave Approaches
Amman, February 20 (Petra) -- The Jordan Meteorological Department has urged citizens to exercise caution while driving due to reduced visibility and the risk of slippery roads caused by severe weather conditions. The department advised the public to stay updated through official channels. In its latest bulletin on Thursday, the department warned of possible flooding in valleys and low-lying areas, low horizontal visibility due to dust in desert regions, and slippery roads resulting from expected rainfall. Strong winds may also pose risks to vehicles and temporary structures, while frost and freezing conditions are anticipated during the early morning and late night hours, particularly on Sunday and Monday. The department confirmed that periodic updates will be issued on the developments of the polar wave dubbed "Jalmoud." The Kingdom is set to experience a deep air depression and an extremely cold air mass of polar origin in the coming days, causing a sharp drop in temperatures alongside heavy rain, snowfall, and strong winds. Since this morning, Jordan has been affected by a low-pressure system centered over Syria, leading to a significant temperature drop. The weather has turned cold, cloudy, and rainy across most regions, with heavy downpours at times in the west, accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and flash floods. Wind speeds have exceeded 65 km/h, causing dust storms in desert areas. The impact of the polar air mass is expected to intensify on Friday, bringing very cold weather with partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Light rain is forecasted in the western regions, mixed with snow over high elevations in the north and south. Winds will remain strong, raising dust in some eastern and southern areas. By Saturday, temperatures will continue to drop as the polar air mass deepens. The weather will remain extremely cold, with rain persisting in northern, central, eastern, and southwestern parts of the Kingdom. Light snowfall may occur over high elevations, especially at night, while strong winds with gusts exceeding 60 km/h will further reduce visibility in desert areas. The impact of the "Jalmoud" wave will persist on Sunday, with continued frigid temperatures and morning rain showers in western regions. Snowfall may occur over mountainous areas, with increased chances of intermittent snow showers later in the night. Frost and sleet are expected to form across several regions. //Petra// AJ
