10/ University of Jordan, IAEA Discuss Nuclear Medicine Cooperation

Amman, February 19 (Petra) -- President of the University of Jordan Nazir Obeidat on Wednesday met with a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) to discuss avenues for collaboration and mechanisms to support the Nuclear Medicine Department at the University of Jordan Hospital.

The IAEA delegation was led by Deputy Director General and Director of the Technical Cooperation Department Hua Liu, while JAEC Chairperson Khaled Touqan headed the commission’s delegation. The meeting was also attended by University Hospital Director General Nader Basoul.

Obeidat underscored the university’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the IAEA and JAEC to enhance nuclear medicine capabilities. He highlighted the importance of equipping the Nuclear Medicine Department with advanced medical technologies, particularly a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner, which would mark a significant advancement in precision diagnostics. He noted that the hospital serves over 600,000 patients annually and benefits from highly skilled medical and technical personnel.

Basoul emphasized the hospital’s ongoing efforts to secure support from local and international institutions to enhance medical, educational, and research services. He pointed out that the acquisition of a PET scanner would significantly benefit patients with cancer, cardiac conditions, and neurological disorders by improving disease detection, monitoring treatment responses, and ultimately enhancing recovery rates and quality of life.

Liu commended Jordan’s pivotal role in the region and the high-quality medical services it offers, making it a destination for patients from Jordan and beyond. He reaffirmed the IAEA’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s institutions as a priority within the agency’s cooperation framework.

Touqan reiterated JAEC’s readiness to provide comprehensive support to strengthen Jordan’s medical sector, particularly the University of Jordan Hospital, as an integrated academic and research medical center.

At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation toured the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Departments and received a briefing on the existing medical technologies and services.
