24/ Jordan Unveils Executive Program to Curb Indiscriminate Waste Dumping

Amman, Dec. 18 (Petra) – Jordan has launched preparations for a nationwide executive program to reduce indiscriminate waste dumping in 2026–2027. The initiative, overseen by a high-level government steering committee, aims to enhance public cleanliness, protect the environment, and safeguard public health across all governorates.

Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said the program will adopt a comprehensive strategy combining infrastructure expansion, intensified cleaning operations, and strengthened law enforcement. Measures include increasing waste containers, improving collection, transportation, and disposal systems, deploying specialized cleaning teams, and monitoring violations through modern technology, including automated electronic systems and cameras on designated vehicles.

He noted that the Prime Minister emphasized that waste dumping is "unacceptable" under any circumstances, calling for continuous public awareness campaigns in schools, universities, religious institutions, and media outlets to foster sustainable environmental behaviors.

The steering committee includes ministers from Local Administration, Public Works and Housing, Government Communication, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Interior, Finance, Agriculture, and Tourism and Antiquities, along with the head of the Greater Amman Municipality Committee and the Director of Public Security. The committee will oversee nationwide implementation and coordinate efforts among government bodies, citizens, and civil society.

Suleiman stressed that the program represents a qualitative leap in managing the cleanliness sector, integrating technological monitoring, enforcement, community engagement, and environmental education. The Ministry of Environment is committed to ensuring transparent and efficient execution to improve Jordan’s urban environment, enhance the quality of life, and strengthen the Kingdom’s civil, touristic, and investment appeal, he added.
