19/ Industry Minister: 250 Jordanian Trucks Enter Syria Daily, plus transit cargo

Amman, August 18 (Petra) – Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply Yarub Qudah said on Monday that between 200 and 250 Jordanian trucks loaded with national products cross to Syria daily along with transit cargo.

Speaking at the Second Conference on Industry, Investment and the Reconstruction of Syria, Al Qudah said the growing exports to Syria have positively impacted activity in the Port of Aqaba, where the volume of container handling rose by 30 percent.

He said talks are underway with relevant authorities to ramp up transit trade with various countries, including reopening Bab al-Hawa crossing between Turkey and Syria through which to export Jordanian goods to Europe and other markets.

The minister urged the Jordanian private sector to seize opportunities available in the Syrian market, particularly in export fields, pointing to the presence of government committees to enhance cooperation in trade, transport, administrative and technical infrastructure, water, and agriculture.

He said the national economy made positive results on several levels despite regional challenges.

Growth in the first quarter of the year reached 2.7 percent, exceeding previous predictions of 2.2 percent, and national exports soared by 9.2 percent in the first five months of the year, together with a 14 percent surge in foreign investments, he pointed out.
