14/ Senate Foreign Affairs Committee urges int'l action for Gaza ceasefire
Amman, Aug 18 (Petra) – The Senate's Arab, International and Expatriates Affairs Committee on Monday called on the international community and the United Nations Security Council to shoulder their legal and moral responsibility to stop the war on the Gaza Strip. In a meeting chaired by its rapporteur Ali Al-Ayed, the committee commended His Majesty King Abdullah II's stance in support of the Palestinian cause and his efforts to influence decision makers in the world community to adopt common pro-Palestinian positions. Committee members also valued HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah's initiative to reinstate the national service program (conscription), as a clear message that Jordan is strong with its sons and youth, who stand united to protect the country and its institutions, under the leadership of its wise leadership. Also in a statement, the committee condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remark on so-called "Greater Israel" vision at the expense of Arab lands, and the ongoing illegal and unlawful settlement expansion that separates the north and south of the occupied West Bank and forestalls any possibility of creating an independent Palestinian state. Such statements, it said, reveal Israel's real intentions, that are based on expansion, hegemony, and aggression, stressing that Israel bears full responsibility for the absence of peace and stability in the region. The committee urged prompt action to end the occupation and enable the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate rights to freedom and independence, and set up their independent state on the June 4, 1967, borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It called Israeli statements and actions "a flagrant and serious violation" of international legitimacy resolutions, the 1949 fourth Geneva Conventions, the Hague Conventions of 1907, and the United Nations Charter. The proposed expansionist maps and proposals, as well as the settlement activity and aggression in the occupied Palestinian territories pose a direct threat to international peace and security and undermine the foundations of the peace process and the internationally-endorsed two-state solution as the only just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, said the statement. //Petra//SS
