11/ Jordan condemns Israeli PM's incursion into occupied West Bank
Amman, Aug 18 (Petra) -- Jordan condemned in the strongest terms Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's incursion into the occupied West Bank, where he vowed from an illegal Jewish settlement to forestall the creation of a Palestinian state. The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs called the remark "a flagrant violation of international law and an affront to the international will and the internationally-backed two-state solution." The Ministry's official spokesperson Sufian Qudah reiterated that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories, restating Jordan's absolute rejection and strong condemnation of ongoing provocative actions and statements by extremist Israeli government officials. Such statements, he pointed out, are designed to perpetuate the illegal occupation and colonial settlements in violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2334, which condemns all Israeli measures aimed to alter the demographic composition, character, and status of the Palestinian territory that has been occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. Qudah invoked the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which stressed the need to end the Israeli occupation and declared the annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories as null and void. The spokesman warned against illegal unilateral Israeli government measures, statements and actions to forcibly impose new facts on the ground, and continued implementation of expansionist schemes in the occupied West Bank and escalating violence in the region. These plans encourage the continuation of cycles of violence and conflict, which require a clear international stance condemning them and warning of their dire consequences for the security and stability of the region, he said. Qudah reiterated a call on the international community to shoulder its legal and moral responsibility and compel Israel and its extremist government to halt its aggression against Gaza, its dangerous escalation in the occupied West Bank, and the provocative statements of its officials. He also called on the world community to provide the necessary protection for the Palestinian people, fulfill their legitimate rights to establish an independent, sovereign state on their national soil, halt the crimes committed against them and hold perpetrators accountable. //Petra//SS
