13/ Truck driver saved by runaway ramp on Dead Sea road
Amman, Aug 2 (Petra) – A truck driver was saved on Saturday by a newly-built runaway ramp on the Dead Sea Road after a sudden brake failure, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing said. The vehicle came to a stop just 50 meters after entering a 455-meter sandy lane on the steep road in Adasiyea, which is designed to absorb the speed of heavy vehicles, regardless of size and load, a video recorded by the driver showed. It came as the ministry almost completed construction of three safety ramps, part of a project to enhance traffic safety on the road to the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea. The ramps or emergency corridors, designed according to up-to-date standards in terms of length and elevation, include construction of a direct truck lane, advanced cutting and backfilling work, and sand and gravel arrester beds, as well as support walls and protective barriers. The escape routes or emergency corridors are key to avoiding accidents on the Dead Sea Road, which descends from a high elevation, potentially over 1,000 meters, down to 400 meters below sea level, over a distance of 25 kilometers. //Petra//SS
