7/ Cancer Conference Pushes for Awareness, Early Detection

Amman, April 27 (Petra) -- Leading cancer experts gathered at the 26th International Oncology Association Conference emphasized the urgent need for continued awareness campaigns and early detection initiatives to combat cancer.

"Making early screenings accessible and affordable, especially in underserved areas, remains a top priority," said Dr. Sami Al-Khatib, Association President and Secretary-General of the Arab League for Cancer Control, during the closing session.

The conference highlighted several key strategies to reduce cancer's impact, including promoting healthy lifestyles through proper nutrition and physical activity while discouraging harmful habits like smoking.

A major focus was empowering cancer survivors to share their stories. "Patient voices are powerful tools for both awareness and support," noted one participant.

The business community was urged to step up through corporate social responsibility programs offering employee screenings and supporting awareness events like charity runs and community outreach activities.

Dr. Hani Al-Taani, Chairman of the Scientific Committee, pointed to remarkable progress in oncology science. "We now identify specific cancer 'fingerprints' that help determine the most effective treatment approaches, whether chemical, immunological, or targeted therapies," he explained.

Other recommendations included integrating cancer education into school curricula and promoting preventive vaccinations like HPV and Hepatitis B.

The conference concluded with a call for enhanced psychological and social support systems for patients and families navigating cancer treatment and recovery.
