23/ Senate’s Palestine Committee, Chinese Envoy Discuss Partnership

Amman, April 17 (Petra) – The Senate's Palestine Committee, chaired by Senator Mazen Darwazah, met Thursday with Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Chen Chuandong to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and advancing a strategic partnership, particularly in support of the Palestinian cause.

Darwazah praised China's growing international influence and its consistent position in supporting Palestinian rights. He highlighted His Majesty King Abdullah II’s firm stance against the displacement of Palestinians and reiterated that the establishment of a Palestinian state on its national soil is essential for regional peace and stability.

The meeting also addressed the need to bolster political and diplomatic cooperation between Jordan and China, particularly in international forums. Darwazah emphasized China’s role in the UN Security Council, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, and condemned the continued collective punishment of civilians in the Strip.

He expressed support for Chinese initiatives rooted in the two-state solution and urged a more prominent Chinese role in pressuring Israel to end violations of international law, including illegal settlement activity. He also underlined the importance of protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under Hashemite custodianship, calling it a vital part of preserving the city’s Arab and religious identity.

Darwazah acknowledged China’s contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and called for increased support to sustain its essential services in education, health, and humanitarian relief.

Chuandong affirmed the historical ties between the two countries, established a century ago with the founding of the Jordanian state and the Chinese Communist Party. He commended King Abdullah’s global advocacy for the Palestinian cause and reaffirmed China’s support for Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem’s holy sites.

Chuandong reiterated China’s rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians and violence in the West Bank and Gaza. He also underscored the importance of continued humanitarian assistance and support for UNRWA amid efforts to discredit its role.

The ambassador reviewed China’s diplomatic efforts at the UN, especially its push for resolutions advocating a ceasefire in Gaza.

Members of the Senate committee expressed appreciation for China’s alignment with Jordan’s position and emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors.
