56/ UN Security Council discusses South Sudan crisis
Mew York, April 16 (Petra) The United Nations Security Council held a session on Wednesday regarding South Sudan, during which members were briefed by Nicholas Haysom, Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Haysom stated that the renewed peace agreement remains the only viable framework to break the cycle of violence in South Sudan. He added that UNMISS is making intensive diplomatic efforts to reach a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis, in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the African Union and the Security Council. Meanwhile, Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, focused on the rapidly escalating violence and its impact on men, women, and children. Wosornu noted that 9.3 million South Sudanese three-quarters of the population will need some form of humanitarian assistance this year, with children making up half of that number. She further explained that the humanitarian needs and response plan for this year requires $1.7 billion to support nearly 5.4 million people. //Petra// AF
