22/ Master plan underway to upgrade Jaber border center with Syria-Ministers
Amman, April 16 (Petra) - Public Works and Housing Minister Maher Abu Samen and Interior Minister Mazen Faraya on Wednesday discussed progress on outlining the master plan studies for the development of the Jaber border center. The scheme aims to draft a "comprehensive" vision that ensures development of the Kingdom's border crossings to meet Jordan's needs for future decades. Held at the Ministry of Public Works headquarters, the discussions brought together representatives of all Jordanian public and security agencies operating the border crossings, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM). Speaking at the meeting, the two ministers stressed the need to develop these border facilities to align with the design standards of international border posts, ensure security and customs compliance and facilitate freight and passenger flow. Both ministers noted this modernization process should benefit from the relevant future vision for the coming years, amid population growth in Jordan and neighboring countries. According to an Ministry of Interior statement, the participants reviewed the master plan for Jaber Border Crossing, design assessment for the first phase, traffic routes, building sites, checkpoints, project implementation stages, estimated costs, and work priorities based on available funding. These efforts will ensure the continued operation of the border crossing during the project implementation period and will secure continuity of cargo and passenger traffic. The ministers also underlined importance of rehabilitating all Jordan's border crossings to keep pace with its status and reputation, achieve the "best" practices in serving visitors to the Kingdom, and providing the "highest" level of services for passengers, trade, and transit traffic through Jordanian territory. //Petra// AG
