Irbid, April 14 (Petra) – The conference titled "Digital Media and the Promotion of Tolerance, Moderation, and Sustainable Social Peace" kicked off on Monday at the University of Oxford’s campus, organized by Yarmouk University’s Faculty of Mass Communication in cooperation with Al-Nabaa International, a Jordanian foundation for international conference management and training. According to a university statement, the conference sheds light on the pivotal role of digital media in disseminating values of tolerance and moderation, while also exploring related challenges and opportunities in the context of rapid technological advancements. The program features academic sessions and workshops focusing on the use of digital media to foster societal harmony and counter hate speech. Dean of the Faculty and Conference Chair Amjad Al-Kadi emphasized that digital media plays a key role in cultivating tolerance, moderation, and sustainable peace within societies. He noted that external actors such as coordinated disinformation campaigns or "electronic flies" can negatively influence perceptions of digital media, underscoring the need to counter these effects by amplifying positive messaging and addressing hate and extremism. Al-Kadi added that the Arab region is undergoing a troubling period amid the ongoing Israeli aggression on Palestinian territories. These circumstances place immense pressure on regional digital media, often impacting its credibility and exposing it to manipulation for political agendas. He stressed the importance of empowering Arab media professionals with the skills to utilize modern digital tools effectively and called for the development of mechanisms to counter disinformation campaigns targeting the region. He further underscored the necessity for joint academic and journalistic efforts to ensure responsible use of digital platforms in conveying constructive messages and fostering intercultural understanding. //Petra// AF
