Amman, Nov. 20 (Petra) -- The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe working environment for individuals exposed to occupational radiation in Jordan. The pledge follows a preparatory meeting held to discuss plans for the Occupational Radiation Protection Appraisal Service (ORPAS) mission, scheduled for July 2024.

The ORPAS mission, initiated at EMRC's request, will be conducted by a team of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The mission aims to evaluate radiation safety protocols in medical, industrial, and research fields, ensuring compliance with international safety standards.

EMRC Chairman Ziyad Al-Sa’ayda stated in a press release on Wednesday that the meeting focused on assessing the legislative and regulatory framework for radiation workers. It also reviewed the oversight mechanisms for registered facilities, including nuclear sites and medical establishments.

"The evaluation will cover key aspects such as compliance with radiation safety requirements, individual exposure monitoring, workplace surveillance, self-assessment consultancy services, and quality management systems in radiation-related activities," Al-Sa’ayda explained.

He highlighted the potential risks of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and research, as well as nuclear fuel cycle operations. The ORPAS mission aims to identify strengths, best practices, and areas for improvement, ensuring alignment with IAEA-approved safety protocols.

Participants in the preparatory meeting included IAEA occupational exposure specialist Burchin Ukyar and Aida Al-Shehi, Director of Radiation Safety at the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation. The discussions were supported by the EMRC’s Radiation Protection Directorate and regulatory units.
