42/ University of Jordan awards Honourary Doctorate to EU's Borrell
Amman, November 20 (Petra) -- The University of Jordan awarded, Wednesday, an honourary doctorate in international relations to Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The award was presented during a ceremony attended by officials, ambassadors and academics to recognise Borrell's contributions to international politics and efforts to promote global peace and security. President of the University of Jordan Dr Nazir Obeidat said the university's decision to honour Borrell comes at a time when the world struggles to distinguish between self-defence and the unjust killing of innocent civilians based solely on their geographical location. Obeidat noted that while universities are focused on educating students, conducting research and generating knowledge, they also have social and political responsibilities as part of the nation's public diplomacy and soft power. Borrell highlighted Jordan's role as a "pillar of stability" amid regional and global turmoil, attributing this stability to the country's "wise" leadership. He commended Jordan’s steadfast commitment to protecting sovereignty, societal diversity, and its willingness to engage in dialogue with its regional neighbours. He praised Jordan's ongoing support for the Palestinian cause. Borrell emphasised the importance of the EU-Jordan partnership in building a shared future in a rapidly changing world. He reiterated that lasting peace requires ending the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, halting massacres and providing relief to innocent victims. He urged impartial accountability and applauded Jordan’s leadership in advancing peace efforts. //Petra// AK
