35/ UN issues statement on looting of aid convoy heading to Gaza
New York, November 18 (Petra) -- UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed today that a convoy of 109 trucks carrying food supplies from the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNRWA was looted on Saturday while en route from the Kerem Shalom crossing to the Gaza Strip. According to a statement, the incident resulted in significant damage to the trucks and, in some cases, the complete loss of the shipments. Dujarric explained that the convoy, initially scheduled to enter Gaza on Sunday, had been rerouted at short notice by Israeli forces via an unfamiliar alternative route. He said the UN faces substantial challenges in delivering aid to southern and central Gaza. "These challenges persist even as we attempt to repair alternative routes and explore new border points, such as the Kissufim crossing," Dujarric said. The UN spokesperson noted that the routes through Kissufim, Kerem Shalom and surrounding roads have proven ineffective due to security concerns, preventing the consistent flow of humanitarian supplies into Gaza. Dujarric noted the severe shortage of supplies, including those necessary for preparing hot meals. The existing stock of supplies is expected to last only two more days, while nearly a million people in Gaza have not received food parcels since July. //Petra// AK
