15/ Environment Minister emphasizes importance of youth engagement in climate forums

Amman, Nov. 16 (Petra) Minister of Environment, Muawieh Radaideh, emphasized the importance of involving youth in international climate forums to amplify their voices on the global stage.

In a meeting the minister and an accompanying youth delegation held with Jordan's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Omar Nahar, on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, he underscored the vital role of youth in climate action, drawing upon the speech delivered by HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II during the conference opening, where he highlighted the significance of youth engagement in environmental and climate initiatives.

Radaideh stressed the importance of Jordanian youth representation at this international event, noting that their presence provides an opportunity to convey their aspirations, achievements, and demands to the global community.

He also referred to a session organized by the conference presidency titled "Advancing Progress on the Global Framework on Children, Youth, Peace, and Climate Security," where climate activist Hala Weshah represented the Jordanian youth voice with an important speech.

Radaideh added that Jordan brings to the conference the outcomes of two policy papers from the Regional Conference of Youth (RCOY) and the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY). These papers address key climate challenges in the region and present recommendations focused on climate change, security and peace, renewable energy, and empowering vulnerable communities.

The minister highlighted that Jordan has included three young individuals in its international negotiation team after intensive training to enhance their skills and enable them to effectively represent Jordan’s priorities.

He emphasized the importance of the participation of Jordanian environmental startups in climate efforts, noting that these enterprises are crucial partners in turning challenges into opportunities.

During the meeting, the youth participants shared their ideas and aspirations regarding climate action, expressing their pride in representing Jordan in such global forums. They also highlighted their activities and achievements during the conference.

The meeting concluded with reaffirmed support from the Ministry of Environment to empower youth in achieving their sustainable development goals, encouraging them to leverage this experience for personal and national progress.
