22/ Reference framework for empowering women in elections, political parties launched

Amman, July 24 (Petra) -- The Independent Election Commission (IEC) Wednesday launched the Strategy for Women Empowerment in Elections and Political Parties 2024-2026 reference framework for women's empowerment.

The Chair of the Board of Commissioners of the IEC Musa Maaytah said, "In Jordan, we have reached an advanced stage in developing women's participation in the political process, which stems from the existence of political parties.

"We have the right to be proud of the model of Jordanian women and their political participation because democracy without women's participation remains with no value."

According to a statement, Maaytah explained that the upcoming parliamentary elections are the first step towards the political modernisation project, adding that the project represents His Majesty King Abdullah II's vision and that of Jordan.

He said the IEC is concerned with managing the elections to ensure justice for all, adding that it would not allow attempts to tamper with the electoral process or affect its course.

He added that the Commission is a constitutional institution that carries out its duties according to the law, noting that parties must learn to exercise democracy within political parties.

The Assistant Representative of the UN Women/Jordan Office, Bushra Abu Sahout, spoke about the strategy that stems from national efforts led by the Commission to be a roadmap for a real environment for women to engage in party work.

Ambassador of Germany Bertram von Moltke said Jordan's constitutional changes are "an indication that there is a royal interest in the process of political modernisation," adding that the upcoming elections are the "cornerstone" for improving Jordanian women's political participation.
