Amman, July 23 (Petra) - Head of the Jordanian National Centre for Epidemics and Communicable Diseases Control (JCDC), Dr. Adel Belbisi, stressed the "crucial" role of laboratories in early diagnosis of pathogens, which helps in prescribing the "appropriate" treatment in "record" time, and reduces the percentage of antibiotic-resistant microbes that have become a global problem.

Belbisi's remarks came during the JCDC's three-day workshop held Tuesday, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and support from the World Health Organization (WHO), to train on implementing global laboratory standards and raising the workers' efficiency in microbiology labs to improve related results for agricultural samples regardless of their source.

Belbisi noted efforts to ensure sound laboratory practices within global frameworks will reflect "positively and directly" on effective health care in the national health system.

Belbisi said the workshop targets 42 laboratories participating in submitting data for the annual report on antibiotic-resistant microbes, and then will include all national labs to improve report quality and raise their workers' efficiency.

Additionally, he noted the WHO is a "strategic" partner of the center in improving the Kingdom's national health system, adding that the organization has supported various projects that have contributed to strengthen Jordan's capabilities and develop its health infrastructure, and also played a "pivotal" role in supporting and promoting public health locally.

For her part, the WHO representative in Jordan, Dr. Jamila Ra'abi, stressed the "true" partnership and "remarkable and constructive" cooperation with Jordan in all health fields.

Expressing happiness over this cooperation with the center, she hoped that the event will increase accuracy of the data provided for the annual report on antibiotic-resistant microbes.
