3/ Energy Ministry Announces Tender for Seismic Monitoring Devices

Amman, July 21 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Sunday announced the launch of a tender to purchase two state-of-the-art strong-motion seismic monitoring devices.

Ghassan Sweidan, head of the Jordan Seismological Observatory at the ministry, stated that these devices will aid in assessing seismic risk by monitoring the region's response to earthquakes and recording the displacement and damage to buildings based on the area's geological structure.

He added that staying current with technological advancements enhances data accuracy in specialized engineering reports and studies, providing essential information to decision-makers and researchers.

Sweidan noted that the national network for seismic monitoring is equipped with 19 strong-motion stations distributed across major cities and dams in the kingdom. These stations record the ground acceleration necessary for earthquake-resistant engineering designs and relay seismic data to the observatory center at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

There are also 32 stations dedicated to weak-motion (telemetered) monitoring covering all of Jordan, including 20 Jordanian stations, one station operated by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), and another by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). All stations are connected to the Jordanian network.

The ministry began selling tender documents today, Sunday, July 21, through Thursday, July 25. The final purchase time is 12 PM, with the last date for submitting inquiries via email to Hana.AlZuabi@MEMR.GOV.JO on Thursday, August 1. The deadline for submitting bids is 1 PM on Monday, August 12.
