Amman, Dec. 18 (Petra) – The 16th Arab Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, hosted at the Dead Sea and organized by the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA) in cooperation with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), concluded on Wednesday with a call to bolster Arab collaboration in nuclear sciences.

The conference emphasized creating partnerships and knowledge networks among research, technical, and educational institutions while advancing scientific research linked to development.

The conference recommended broadening nuclear energy applications in medicine, agriculture, industry, water resources, and food security to enhance Arab citizens' lives and promote sustainable development. It urged the the AAEA to adopt joint research projects, leveraging Arab expertise and fostering synergy between member states.

Participants stressed the importance of establishing an Arab platform for the efficient use of research reactors, facilitating knowledge and expertise exchange across the region. A unified Arab strategy for managing radioactive waste, including its collection, treatment, and safe disposal, was also highlighted as a priority.

The conference called for increased investments in nuclear fusion energy research by forming Arab and international partnerships, capitalizing on global advancements in this promising field. It further recommended raising the technical standards of laboratories through international certifications, such as ISO, to enhance the credibility and quality of scientific research.

Enhancing Arab cooperation in nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness was underscored to safeguard the environment, public, and workers against potential accidents. Unifying Arab efforts and coordinating policies were deemed essential for achieving energy security and sustainable development amid global challenges.

Over five days, the conference gathered scientists and researchers from nine Arab countries, presenting 111 scientific papers and hosting 12 public lectures by prominent Arab nuclear scientists.

On Thursday, participants are scheduled to visit the Jordan Research and Training Reactor at the Jordan University of Science and Technology and the Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME) facility in Allan, Balqa.
