Amman, Dec. 18 (Petra) - Senate President and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the National Project to Defend Arabic Language, Faisal Fayez, chaired a meeting Wednesday with university presidents on the occasion of World Arabic Language Day (WALD).

The day was designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on December 18 annually.

Fayez said protection of Arabic is a "shared" responsibility that falls on governments, scholars, thinkers, media outlets, civil society institutions, family, schools, and universities.

Fayez also noted the importance of the universities' role in protecting Arabic, Arabizing sciences and knowledge, and supporting the national project launched for this purpose.

Furthermore, he called on universities to restore the language's status and commit to implement provisions of the Arabic Language Protection Law.

This effort, he noted, would launch a "comprehensive" cultural renaissance and develop a sense of responsibility in every student towards Arabic.

Fayez urged universities to use Arabic as an official language in all conferences and activities, work to Arabize university education, and contribute to increasing channels for learning Arabic.

Moreover, he called for increasing the number of libraries that provide Arabic books on heritage and literature and hold competitions and other activities to draw students' interest on this issue.

Urging enhanced Arabic content online, he noted that the event comes within the framework of the efforts made by the Amman Group for Future Dialogues in defending Arabic.
