28/ Jordanian National Commission for Women joins WEPs
Amman, Dec. 17 (Petra) -Representative of the UN Women in Jordan, Nicolas Burniat, announced designation of the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) as an ally of the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), as the Kingdom was picked among 5 countries worldwide for this role, along with Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Switzerland. The announcement came during the WEPs Annual Event for the year 2024, which was organized by the UN Women in Jordan Tuesday. In his opening speech, Burniat said the the private sector can only join WEPs, but this year, UN Women headquarters has decided to designate title of "Ally of the Principles" to feature the government sector and organizations, which play an "active" role in advocating these values, through initiatives and activities. Burniat added that selection of the JNCW came as a "pioneering" model in the Arab region as a national body, which encourages the Jordanian private sector to implement these principles to enhance women's economic participation, thus increasing the number of entities under the WEPs umbrella. Jordan, he noted, ranked first in the Arab world in the number of companies under the WEPs membership, as 188 out of 10,444 companies joined the principles for the year 2024 worldwide. Burniat stated WEPs are a set of 7 principles that provide guidance to companies on the mechanism to promote gender equality and empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community. //Petra// AG More...
