26/ GAM, FAO Host Workshop on Tackling Food Loss, Waste in Cities
Amman, December 17 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) organized a workshop on Tuesday titled "Together in Action on Food Loss and Waste at the City Level," in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Municipality of Milan, the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, and the non-profit organization Let’s Food. In a statement, GAM noted that the workshop enhances partnerships, exchanges knowledge, expertise, and best practices among stakeholders while developing a strategic action plan for Amman. It also seeks to transform food and agricultural systems into sustainable, inclusive systems at the city level and to foster mechanisms for continuous joint learning and cooperation. The sessions addressed topics such as learning from the experiences of Amman and Milan, strategies on food waste and food policies, mechanisms for communication between local and national governments to tackle food loss and waste, and implementing directives to reduce food loss across municipalities. These measures aim to create a sustainable future, mitigate climate change effects, and ensure food security. Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohammad Hayari, underscored that food loss negatively impacts both the climate and natural resources, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and significant resource depletion. The Director of City Affairs at GAM, Ahmed Malkawi, stated that the workshop seeks to tackle food loss and waste challenges in urban areas. He emphasized GAM's commitment to the comprehensive strategy developed through both local and international partnerships, aiming to reduce food waste at every stage of the supply chain, from production to consumption. Malkawi further stressed the importance of collaborative efforts among all stakeholders to implement the strategy and called on international partners to provide technical and financial support to expand related initiatives for a more sustainable food future. FAO Representative in Jordan, Nabil Assaf, described food loss and waste as a global challenge with significant consequences. He highlighted that addressing these issues contributes directly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger. The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, emphasized that sharing successful experiences empowers cities to lead initiatives that reduce food waste and advance sustainability while supporting innovative and practical solutions. //Petra// AJ
