37/ JNCW, DoS sign MoU on women-related data
Amman, Dec. 16 (Petra) – The Jordanian National Commission for Women’s Affairs (JNCW) and the Department of Statistics (DoS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to enhance collaboration in sharing statistical data and conducting joint research and reports on issues related to women. According to a statement by the committee, the MoU signed by JNCW Secretary-General Maha Ali and Director-General of the Department of Statistics Haidar Freihat supports the commission's efforts to establish a women-focused observatory for monitoring indicators and data. Ali described the agreement as a key milestone in strengthening cooperation with the Department of Statistics, enabling the committee to fulfill its mandate of monitoring gender-based discrimination in policies and legislation, and assessing the status of women through research and studies. She emphasized the observatory’s role in consolidating qualitative and quantitative data on women in Jordan, supporting their participation in economic, political, and social spheres, and providing evidence-based guidance for policymakers. Freihat highlighted the significance of cooperation in delivering gender-related data and indicators that reflect women’s contributions to various sectors. He announced that the department is in the final stages of launching the National Composite Indicator for Women’s Participation, an initiative developed over the past year to track and enhance women’s involvement across sectors. Deborah Smith, Director of the USAID-supported "Makanti Project" for Women's Economic and Leadership Empowerment, stated that the MoU represents a vital step toward enabling the JNCW to fulfill its responsibilities. By sharing gender-disaggregated data, the agreement will aid the commission in preparing periodic reports on the status of women in Jordan, identifying priorities, and aligning programs with national objectives. //Petra// AF
